Word Builders, Assemble!

Hey, Super Reader! Did you know that big words are often just little words hiding together? It’s like playing with building blocks! You can take two small blocks, snap them together, and build something new and awesome. We're going to learn two secret ways to break down big words into smaller, easy-to-read parts. Let's get building!

Power-Up with Compound Words!

A compound word is just two small words joined together to make one new word. Think of sun and flower. When you put them together, you get sunflower! To read them, just find the two little words inside and read each one.

  • rain + bow = rainbow
  • cup + cake = cupcake
  • foot + ball = football

See? You already know how to read the small parts, so you can definitely read the big word!

Crack the VCCV Secret Code!

Sometimes, a word isn't a compound word, but it still has two parts, or syllables. There's a secret code to help you find where to split it: the VCCV pattern! That stands for Vowel-Consonant-Consonant-Vowel.

When you see two consonant buddies between two vowels, you can usually split the word right between them! It’s like a secret dotted line telling you where to chop.

Look at the word rabbit. We see a-b-b-i. That's VCCV! So we split it between the two 'b's: rab / bit. Easy peasy! How about basket? We see a-s-k-e (VCCV!), so we split it: bas / ket.

Your Turn, Word Builder!

Let's make a new compound word! What happens if you mix the word jelly and the word fish? You get a jellyfish! It's a sea animal that's wobbly like jelly. Now you try! What new word can you build?
