Become a Character Detective! ๐ต๏ธโโ๏ธ
Hi, Story Explorers! Have you ever wondered why your best friend loves to build amazing LEGO castles while you love to draw colorful pictures? It's because you are both unique people with your own special personalities and goals! Reading a story is like meeting new friends. The people (or animals!) in the story are called characters, and just like you, they have their own feelings and reasons for doing things.
As a Character Detective, your job is to look for clues to understand who these characters are and what makes them tick!
Clue #1: A Character's Traits
Traits are words that describe what a character is like on the inside. We find these clues by watching what a character does and says. Is a character who shares their last cookie with a friend...
- ...kind and generous?
- ...brave for climbing a tall tree to rescue a kitten?
- ...curious for always asking "Why?"
Clue #2: A Character's Motivation
This is the secret reason WHY a character does something. It's what they want! If a wolf is chasing a pig, his motivation might be hunger. If a princess is studying a map, her motivation is to find the hidden treasure! We figure this out by asking, "What does this character want more than anything right now?"
Your Detective Toolkit! ๐
A great character detective knows that characters can change! A shy mouse might learn to be brave by the end of the story. That's called character development. Always watch to see how your characters grow!
Your First Case!
Next time you read, try being a detective. Can you compare two characters? Is one grumpy and the other cheerful? For a super challenge, pretend you ARE the character. Grab a notebook and write a journal entry about a big moment in the story. Explain why you made your choice, just like a real detective explaining a case!
Happy investigating, detectives!
