Authors leave different kinds of clues for you to find. Let's look at some of the most common ones:

  • Definition Clue: The sentence just tells you what the word means!
Example: "The aviary, which is a large house for birds, was full of colorful parrots."
  • Synonym Clue: A word that means the same thing is used nearby. (Synonyms = Same!)
Example: "The boy was so joyful. He was happy to see his new puppy." (Joyful means happy!)
  • Antonym Clue: A word that means the opposite is used. (Antonyms = Opposite!)
Example: "The kitten was tiny, not enormous like the dog." (Tiny means the opposite of enormous!)

"The giant was gargantuan, so big he could almost touch the clouds. But he was also very amiable, or friendly to everyone he met. He lived in a cozy dwelling at the top of the mountain."

How did you do, detective? The clue "so big he could almost touch the clouds" tells us that gargantuan means HUGE! The word "or" gives us a definition clue that amiable means friendly. And since the giant lived there, his dwelling must be his home!
