Word Detectives: Cracking the Code of Big Words!

Hey there, Super Reader! Have you ever built something amazing with LEGOs? You take small bricks, click them together, and suddenly you have a huge, cool creation. Big words are just like that! They look tricky, but they're really just smaller word "bricks" put together. Let's learn how to be Word Detectives and find those small parts!

First Clue: Two Words in One!

Sometimes, a big word is just two little words holding hands. We call these compound words. When you spot one, you can use the two small words to guess the meaning of the big one.

  • sun + flower = sunflower (a flower that loves the sun!)
  • play + ground = playground (a ground where you play!)
  • rain + bow = rainbow (a bow shape you see after it rains!)

Next Clue: Secret Word Parts

Other times, big words have special parts added to the beginning or end. These parts change the meaning of the main word, which we call the root word.

A prefix is a part added to the beginning of a word.

  • un- means "not" (unhappy = not happy)
  • re- means "again" (reread = read again)

A suffix is a part added to the end of a word.

  • -ful means "full of" (careful = full of care)
  • -less means "without" (fearless = without fear)
