Let's Build a Story, Block by Block!
Hey, superstar reader! Have you ever built an awesome tower with LEGOs or blocks? Think about how you do it. You start with a strong base, build up the middle part, and finish with a cool piece on top. Guess what? Stories are built in the exact same way!
A story is just like your block tower. It has a start, a middle, and an end. And usually, somewhere in the middle, there's a little wobble—a problem the characters have to fix! How they fix it is the solution.
The Three Parts of Every Story
Let’s look at the building blocks of a great tale. Every story you read follows this simple, secret recipe:
-
1
The Beginning: This is the story's foundation. We meet the characters (the WHO) and find out the setting (the WHERE and WHEN). It sets everything up!
-
2
The Middle: This is the exciting, action-packed part! The main character faces a big Problem or a challenge. Oh no! What will they do? The events in the middle build up the excitement.
-
3
The End: Phew! This is where we see the Solution. The character solves the problem, and we see how everything turns out. This is also called the resolution.
⭐ Key Takeaway: The Problem & Solution!
The most important parts of the story's middle and end are the Problem and the Solution. The problem is the challenge the character must overcome. The solution is how they do it! It's what makes a story so interesting to read.
Your Awesome Storytelling Mission!
Now for a super fun challenge! Let's think about the story "Goldilocks and the Three Bears." The bears have a problem: someone has been in their house, eaten their porridge, and broken a chair!
Your Turn! Imagine you are the little, broken chair. Retell the story from your perspective! Start from when the house was quiet, describe the problem (when Goldilocks sat on you!), and the solution (when the bears came home and found her). Thinking from a new point of view helps you see the story's building blocks perfectly!
You are an amazing story detective! Keep looking for the beginning, middle, and end in every book you read.
