Super Sound Sleuths: Let's Stretch Our Words!

Hi, friend! Have you ever played with a rubber band? You can stretch it out really, really long, and then let it snap back together. Guess what? We can do the same thing with words! It’s a super-secret trick that helps us become amazing spellers.

Let's try it with the word cat. Imagine we are holding the word like a stretchy piece of bubble gum. Now, let's stretch it out slowly and say each sound we hear. Ready?

/c/ ... /a/ ... /t/

Wow! Did you hear those three sounds? That's called segmenting. We broke the word into its tiny sound pieces. Most short words, called CVC words, have three sounds: a beginning, a middle, and an end sound, just like a sound sandwich!

Once you can hear all the sounds, you can write them down. This is how we turn sounds into letters on our paper!

  • The first sound, /c/, is made by the letter C.
  • The middle sound, /a/, is made by the letter A.
  • The last sound, /t/, is made by the letter T.

C - A - T ... We spelled CAT! You did it!

Your Spelling Superpower!

Breaking words into sounds is your secret power for spelling! When you want to write a word, just say it slowly, listen for each sound, and then write the letter that makes each sound you hear.

You are becoming an amazing reader and writer. Keep practicing stretching out your words. What sounds do you hear in the word sun? How about pig? Keep up the fantastic work, Sound Sleuth!
