You're a CVC Word Builder!
Hi, Super Speller! Did you know that writing words is a lot like building with LEGOs? You take a few special letter blocks, click them together in the right order, and—*poof*!—you’ve built a word. Today, we're going to build special words called CVC words.
Think of a CVC word like a yummy sandwich. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end.
- 🍞 Consonant (the first slice of bread)
- 🍓 Vowel (the yummy jelly in the middle: a, e, i, o, u)
- 🍞 Consonant (the last slice of bread)
When we put the sounds /c/, /a/, and /t/ together, we build the word cat!
To write a CVC word, we become "Sound Detectives." We stretch the word out like a piece of gooey slime to hear every single sound. Let's try writing the word "sun".
- Say the word slowly: "ssss-uuuu-nnnn".
- What's the first sound? /s/. That's the letter S!
- What's the middle vowel sound? /u/. That's the letter U!
- What's the last sound? /n/. That's the letter N!
Write them down together, and you've spelled s-u-n. You did it!
Your Word Building Secret!
Remember, every CVC word has three sounds. Just listen for the beginning, middle, and end sounds to spell it perfectly. The middle sound will always be one of our super vowels: a, e, i, o, u.
Let's Invent a Game: CVC Word Hop!
Ready to play? Ask a grown-up to help you with this fun game!
- Draw some big circles on the sidewalk with chalk or on paper indoors.
- Inside each circle, draw a picture of a CVC word (like a pig, a web, or a cup).
- To win, you have to hop to a circle and spell the word for the picture inside!
You are doing an amazing job building words. Keep practicing, and you'll be a writing rockstar!
